Even though it is fairly common, erectile dysfunction can be an embarrassing, frustrating, and upsetting condition to experience. When it happens, you want a quick and effective solution that can get you feeling confident again.

Finding a fast and safe treatment for erectile dysfunction can save you from the frustration that an unfilling sexual experience can cause. Luckily there are a few treatments that have been shown to reduce ED symptoms, helping you better get and maintain an erection for longer. Let’s talk about why ED happens, and some of your options for treating ED fast.

ED symptoms and causes

Erectile dysfunction is the most common sex-related condition that men report to their healthcare providers, impacting about 52% of men between the ages of 40 and 70. (Yafi, 2017)

Erectile dysfunction symptoms include:

  • The inability to get an erection

  • The inability to maintain an erection during sexual intercourse

  • Requiring a lot of stimulation to maintain an erection

  • Having occasional difficulty getting an erection prior to sex

How often men experience ED can vary, but if you identify with any of the above symptoms, you may want to speak to a healthcare provider.

The most likely and primary cause of ED is the inability or difficulty delivering blood to the penis, to maintain an erection. (Cleveland Clinic, 2023) However, researchers and medical professionals have noted a wide range of conditions and factors that may contribute to erectile dysfunction, including  (Yafi, 2017) (Cleveland Clinic, 2023) :

  • Complications within the endocrine system, the nervous system, or the circulatory system

  • Conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and more.

  • Injury or trauma to the penis or surrounding area

  • Certain medications or substances, including alcohol, prescription drugs, and more.

  • Psychological or emotional conditions: Sexual performance anxiety, depression, stress, body image issues, etc.

What can be used to treat ED fast?

There are a range of ED treatment options that can help reduce symptoms, including oral ED medication, injections, improving healthy habits, a penile implant, speaking with a sex therapist, vacuum devices, and more. (Wang, 2023) (Cleveland Clinic, 2023)

Common pharmaceutical medications for ED, from left to right: Rugiet Ready, sildenafil, avanafil, Trimix.

Today, we’re going to focus on the fastest erectile dysfunction treatment methods.

Oral medications

There are a range of oral ED pills, melts, and tablets on the market that work by increasing blood flow to the penis, helping you achieve and maintain an erection. These prescription medications are known as phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. (Wang, 2023

Some examples of these oral medications include:

  • Sildenafil (Viagra®)

  • Vardenafil (Levitra®)

  • Tadalafil (Cialis®)

  • Avanafil (Stendra®)

  • Rugiet Ready

Another type of medication that can be taken orally is apomorphine (APO), a dopamine agonist that has been shown to help prime the brain for sexual arousal, leading to positive effects on those struggling with psychogenic erectile dysfunction. (Ribaric S, 2012)

Most oral medications are said to work within one hour, however, Rugiet Ready- a combination of sildenafil, tadalafil, and apomorphine- begins working in 15 minutes or less.

Let’s talk about these medications in more detail.

Sildenafil, vardenafil, tadalafil, and avanafil pills

Sildenafil (Viagra®) and tadalafil (Cialis®) are some of the most well-known ED medications. Sildenafil is a vasodilator that promotes blood flow, helping more blood flow to the penis during arousal, leading to an erection. When taken in pill form, it takes about 30-60 minutes to kick in. (Cleveland Clinic, 2023

Tadalafil, like sildenafil, is another PDE5 inhibitor that helps maintain blood flow. The key difference between the two ED meds is that tadalafil lasts longer (up to 36 hours after ingestion, compared to approximately 4 hours for sildenafil).  (Kemper, 2024

Avanafil and vardenafil are also PDE5 inhibitors and also vary in average onset and duration, but most researchers agree that all of these PDE5 medications have similar efficacy, safety, and tolerability. (Wang, 2023

Rugiet Ready

Rugiet Ready treats E.D. up to 5X faster than pills and chewable ED treatments thanks to the triple ingredient formulate that comes in the form of a sublingual mint-flavored melt.

The sublingual melt dissolves under the tongue, where the medicine directly enters the bloodstream through the mucous membranes, bypassing the liver and digestive system. This means that onset time will not be delayed by food intake.

Rugiet Ready contains sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis), and APO (a dopamine promoter). Tadalafil is known to last up to 36 hours upon arousal. That means it’s both fast-acting and long-lasting.

APO primes the brain for arousal by acting on the dopamine receptors in the parts of the brain associated with sexual function, and the DPE5 inhibitors help boost and maintain blood flow in the body. Injectable medications

Another fast-acting treatment option is an injectable medication. These are drugs that are injected directly into the penis to help create an erection. Because of the local administration, these medications begin to work within 10 minutes. (Cleveland Clinic, 2023)  Common injectables include:

  • Alprostadil (Caverject®)

  • Papaverine (Papacon®)

  • Phentolamine (Regitine®)

  • As well as combinations of multiple medications, such as Trimix

Injectable medications are more invasive than an oral medication, but they can be a good option for those hoping to get very fast results.

Vacuum constriction devices

A vacuum constriction device (VCD), commonly known as a penis pump, is an external pump with a band attached that helps the penis become erect. The pump works by creating a vacuum seal around the penis. This draws blood into the shaft, causing the penis to swell and become erect. A band can then be placed on the lower end of the penis to maintain the erection. Using a VCD is fairly simple and in most cases, will start to work immediately, and can be safely left on for about 30 minutes. (Cleveland Clinic, 2020)
